Do I need an auctioneers license to be able to conduct an online auction?

Each state has its own laws and regulations which govern whether or not you need an auctioneers license to sell items via online auction. If you are a professional estate liquidator, then you should refer to our guide to auction license laws, which describes auction laws by state to see if you need to obtain an auctioneers license prior to conducting an online auction. Private individuals typically do not need an auctioneers license if they are selling items from their own estate.

If your state requires you to have a license to conduct an online auction, then you may still choose to sell items online using the online auction sale type, but all items must all be set to "Buy-it-Now" and must not be set to "Enable Bidding". This effectively makes your listing an online sale with fixed price items rather than an auction, and therefore does not require an auctioneers license.
